Based in Chicago, Illinois, it operates primarily on the city’s South and West Sides—neighborhoods where access to fresh produce and green spaces has historically been limited. Founded in 2017, the organization builds on years of urban farming experience. Since its inception, it has become a prime example of how agricultural practices can drive community revitalization, education, and economic support. A former professional basketball player turned urban farming pioneer, Allen’s groundbreaking work earned him a MacArthur Foundation grant. After facing financial difficulties, Growing Power closed its doors in 2017. Shortly after, Allen’s daughter, Erika Allen, launched the Urban Growers Collective. She created the new organization to preserve and expand on Chicago’s urban farming legacy while adapting it to modern social and climate challenges. One of its first major projects was an expansive, seven-acre farming space in South Chicago, which remains the organization’s largest site.

Urban Farms and Gardens

By the late 2010s, the Urban Growers Collective managed eight urban farms and gardens scattered across Chicago. These spaces pull double duty as both production hubs and outdoor classrooms. The farms rely on organic growing methods, intensive farming techniques, and year-round production practices. They grow a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and edible flowers, alongside keeping bees, chickens, and goats. This hands-on approach ensures a steady supply of fresh food while providing a solid educational foundation for community programs.

One of the organization’s core missions is bringing fresh food to neighborhoods historically impacted by food deserts. They distribute their produce through farmers’ markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, and mobile markets. A standout initiative is the Fresh Moves Mobile Market. Built from retrofitted Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) buses, these rolling markets deliver fresh produce directly to communities lacking easy access to supermarkets. To ensure healthy food is accessible to low-income families, the buses accept multiple forms of payment, including SNAP benefits.

Educational and Youth Programs

The Urban Growers Collective heavily invests in the city’s youth through educational and summer programs. Teens from Chicago Public Schools participate in farm camps and tours, getting a firsthand look at crop cultivation, ecology, and the social aspects of our food systems. The organization also runs the Youth Corps, an initiative that engages teens in hands-on farm work while integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education. This blend helps students pair practical skills with critical thinking and civic engagement.

Through a partnership with After School Matters, the collective provides students with paid internships that offer real-world urban farming experience. Beyond agriculture, these educational tracks include training in public speaking, community advocacy, and environmental awareness, empowering young people to become confident leaders.

Another flagship initiative is Grounds for Peace, a program designed to transform vacant city lots into vibrant green spaces. Run in partnership with the City of Chicago and various community organizations, this project goes far beyond neighborhood beautification. It creates jobs, helps reduce violence, and builds essential life skills for at-risk young men.

The collective manages several unique farming spaces, each serving a distinct purpose. For instance, the Altgeld Gardens farm features a bee sanctuary dedicated to supporting pollinator populations and cultivating native plants. Over in Bronzeville, the Educare Preschool Farm seamlessly integrates agriculture into early childhood education. Meanwhile, the Grant Park site operates as an educational and demonstration space, blending art, urban planning, and agricultural practices right in the heart of the city.

One of their most ambitious projects is the Green Era Urban Energy Campus. This initiative is transforming a former industrial brownfield into a thriving sustainability hub. The campus features an urban farm, educational facilities, and renewable energy systems. Its ultimate goal is to tackle food security, drive environmental restoration, and spark economic development within the community.

To keep these initiatives thriving, the Urban Growers Collective hosts annual charity events that bring together corporate partners, donors, and community organizations. These gatherings are crucial for funding ongoing programs and expanding the footprint of their urban farms.

Ultimately, the Urban Growers Collective proves that urban farming can go far beyond simply growing food. It serves as a powerful catalyst for social change. By blending food justice, environmental education, youth empowerment, and neighborhood revitalization, the organization is planting the seeds for a better, more sustainable Chicago.

This non-profit organization brings together urban farming, food justice, and community development programs.
