Seventeen acres of gardens, lawn and rebuilt riverbank now occupy what was a Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad yard \u2014 ground that for a century kept Chinatown from reaching its own waterfront. It is the rare Chicago park a neighborhood argued into existence, one parcel at a time.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pagoda-style pavilion<\/strong> \u2014 the park&#8217;s emblem, roofed with traditional Chinese tiles and set so the skyline stands directly behind it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four Dragon Gateway<\/strong> \u2014 four twenty-foot columns etched with dragons frame the ceremonial entrance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Riverside boardwalk<\/strong> \u2014 some 300 feet of red ornamental railing set with gongshi, the pitted limestone scholar&#8217;s stones quarried at Lake Tai in China.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ping Tom Boathouse<\/strong> \u2014 opened June 2013, with a floating dock, a public launch for non-motorized craft and seasonal kayak rentals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leonard M. Louie Fieldhouse<\/strong> \u2014 30,000 square feet opened in October 2013: gymnasium, natatorium, fitness center, green roof and a terrace above the river.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Return of the Yellow Cranes&#8221;<\/strong> \u2014 a 2012 gift from Wuhan; the stainless-steel &#8220;Stone Talk&#8221; followed from Shanghai in 2015, marking thirty years of sister-city ties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park runs long and narrow between the water and a live rail embankment, and reads as two parks in one: an ornamental southern half from the original build, and a broader, wilder northern riverfront added after 2009.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chinese-influenced gardens planted with ginkgo and bamboo among granite boulders.<\/li>\n<li>A children&#8217;s playground, open lawns and a full-size athletic field.<\/li>\n<li>Some 875 feet of rebuilt shoreline with engineered fish habitat and a fishing station.<\/li>\n<li>An indoor pool with zero-depth entry, locker rooms, clubrooms and a full kitchen.<\/li>\n<li>Large murals along the underpass walls, painted in 2018 and 2019 in Ming porcelain and Han silk-painting idioms.<\/li>\n<li>A water taxi landing west of the pavilion, in service from spring through autumn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paddlers<\/strong> \u2014 launch into the South Branch and work upstream toward the bridges and the towers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 playground, lawn and an indoor pool, all minutes from Chinatown&#8217;s kitchens and bakeries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photographers<\/strong> \u2014 the pavilion set against the skyline is one of the most reproduced framings in the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anglers and birders<\/strong> \u2014 the northern bank was rebuilt specifically to bring river wildlife back.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Festival crowds<\/strong> \u2014 the Chicago Dragon Boat Race for Literacy has filled this stretch each summer since 1999.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swimmers and gym-goers<\/strong> \u2014 the fieldhouse runs year-round aquatics, badminton, basketball and gymnastics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park lies at the northern edge of Chinatown on the Near South Side, wedged between the river and the rail lines. The Red Line&#8217;s Cermak\u2013Chinatown station is a short walk away, and from spring into autumn the Chicago Water Taxi calls at the park&#8217;s own landing \u2014 arriving by boat, bridges opening ahead of you, is by far the best introduction. Entry to the park and its paths is free and always has been; kayak rentals and fieldhouse memberships or registered programs are charged separately. The grounds open early in the morning and close late at night, while the fieldhouse keeps weekday-heavy hours and closes Sundays. Outdoor restrooms depend on the boathouse vendor being open. Ninety minutes covers the gardens, the boardwalk and the northern lawns without hurrying.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Summer is the park at full volume: kayaks on the water, dragon boat crews training in the evenings, races in July, and the pavilion shading picnics. Autumn is the connoisseur&#8217;s season \u2014 the ginkgos turn a hard uniform yellow, low light runs the length of the river, and the crowds fall away once the water taxi stops for the year. Winter empties the paths but sharpens the skyline to its clearest, and the indoor pool keeps the place genuinely useful through January. Spring brings the taxi back, the magnolias out and the bamboo into fresh leaf, and is the quietest time to have the boardwalk to yourself.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chinatown lost both Hardin Square and Stanford Park in 1962 to expressway construction, and for the next thirty years the neighborhood&#8217;s only public green was a playlot of about a third of an acre. A 1992 study found three quarters of Chinatown&#8217;s community leaders naming the lack of open space as the single most serious problem facing the neighborhood \u2014 first among fifteen. Ping Tom (1935\u20131995), a Chinatown-born businessman and civic leader, founded the Chinese American Development Corporation in 1984 and led its 1989 purchase of a 32-acre former rail yard; the Park District bought roughly twelve riverfront acres out of it in 1991. Tom died of pancreatic cancer in July 1995. The site was named in his honor in August 1998, and Mayor Richard M. Daley opened the first phase on October 2, 1999 \u2014 a five-million-dollar build to a master plan by Ernest C. Wong of Site Design Group, drawing on the classical gardens of Suzhou. Five more acres came in 2002, tax increment financing approved in 2009 paid for the northern riverfront, and the boathouse and fieldhouse both opened in 2013. The fieldhouse was renamed in 2015 for Leonard M. Louie, who had founded the park&#8217;s advisory council in 1999.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Come by water taxi at least once \u2014 the approach past the bridges beats any walk in, and it runs only in the warm half of the year.<\/li>\n<li>Kayak rentals are seasonal and weather-dependent, and summer weekends fill up; reserve ahead rather than turning up hopeful.<\/li>\n<li>The two halves connect beneath the rail line. Stopping at the pavilion means missing the newer riverfront and the fishing station entirely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Questions_answers\"><\/span>Questions &amp; answers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is there an entry fee?<\/strong> No. The grounds, gardens, boardwalk and playground are free to everyone, all year round. Only kayak rentals and fieldhouse memberships or registered programs cost anything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you rent kayaks here?<\/strong> Yes, at the boathouse during the warm months. Singles and tandems launch straight onto the South Branch. Rentals lapsed for three years and returned in 2023; hours follow the weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who was Ping Tom?<\/strong> A Chinatown-born businessman and civic leader (1935\u20131995) who spent his last decade assembling the land this park stands on. A bronze bust of him was installed here in October 2005.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it good for small children?<\/strong> Very. While I waited, ducks and squirrels came out to enjoy the cool weather and to eat.
