Four hundred million years ago it was a coral reef in a shallow tropical sea. In the 1830s crews began blasting that reef out as building stone, and kept going until 1970, leaving a hole that reached hundreds of feet down. For three decades after that it was filled with construction rubble. Then the Chicago Park District bought it, capped it, planted it, and built a hill on top with a downtown skyline view. Locals call it Mount Bridgeport.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The prairie planting<\/strong> \u2014 native grassland covering the slopes, chosen for a thin engineered soil over waste fill where conventional planting would fail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The name<\/strong> \u2014 Henry Palmisano, the Bridgeport bait-shop owner, angler and conservationist whose family business anchored the neighborhood and for whom the park was renamed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is built on the extremes of its own history: a deep bowl on one side, an artificial summit on the other, and a designed water system linking them. Almost every surface is doing a technical job as well as a recreational one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The quarry bowl and its fishing pond, reached by stepped paths down the old excavation.<\/li>\n<li>The terraced stream and wetland cells that clean and slow stormwater through the site.<\/li>\n<li>A hilltop overlook with an unobstructed view of the downtown skyline.<\/li>\n<li>Running and walking paths, including a loop over the mound that local runners use for hill repeats.<\/li>\n<li>Restored prairie and native plantings across the slopes, deliberately left rough.<\/li>\n<li>Landfill gas venting infrastructure, visible if you look for it, managing the buried debris underneath.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anglers<\/strong> \u2014 the pond is genuinely fished, catch-and-release, and it is one of very few places to cast a line inside the city without going to the lake.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Runners<\/strong> \u2014 the mound gives real vertical in a flat city, and the loop over it is the reason serious runners come here rather than to a lakefront path.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photographers<\/strong> \u2014 the skyline from the summit at sunset, framed by prairie grass, is an unusual angle on Chicago.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anyone interested in engineering<\/strong> \u2014 the whole park is a working demonstration of brownfield remediation, and it does not hide it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birders and naturalists<\/strong> \u2014 the prairie and the wetland cells pull in more species than a park this size in this neighborhood ought to hold.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families and dog walkers<\/strong> \u2014 a straightforward neighborhood green space with paths, grass and a hill that children treat as a toy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park sits in Bridgeport on Chicago&#8217;s near South Side. CTA bus route 8 runs along Halsted through the neighborhood and route 35 crosses it, both connecting to the rail network; the Orange Line&#8217;s Halsted station is the closest elevated stop and an easy walk. There is street parking around the perimeter. The park is free to enter with no admission of any kind, and it keeps standard Chicago Park District hours from early morning until late evening. Fishing is catch-and-release and subject to state licensing rules for adults, which are handled through the state rather than the park. Allow forty-five minutes to an hour to walk the quarry bowl, the stream and the summit; add time if you are fishing or running loops.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring brings the prairie back after the seasonal burn, the stream runs hard with snowmelt and rain, and the pond gets its first serious fishing pressure of the year. Summer is the park at full volume \u2014 grasses shoulder-high on the slopes, the pond busy from early morning, and the hilltop catching whatever breeze exists on hot South Side afternoons. Autumn is the best light: the prairie turns copper, the skyline sharpens in cool clear air, and sunset arrives early enough to catch after work. Winter strips it back to geology, which is arguably the honest version of this park \u2014 the quarry wall reads clearly with no vegetation in front of it, and the hill becomes the neighborhood&#8217;s sledding ground the moment there is snow on it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The dolomite limestone here formed as a coral reef roughly four hundred million years ago, in the Silurian period, when this part of North America lay under a shallow tropical sea. Quarrying began in the 1830s, supplying stone for buildings and for the Illinois and Michigan Canal; Marcus Stearns, an early Chicago settler who had started out running a supply store for canal workers, gave the operation its name, and it continued as Stearns Quarry after his death in 1890, closing only in 1970. At its deepest the excavation reached several hundred feet. For nearly three decades afterward the hole was filled with construction debris \u2014 wood, brick, stone and incinerator ash \u2014 until the site was acquired for parkland at the end of the 1990s. Site Design Group led the transformation, and the park opened in 2009 as Stearns Quarry Park. It was subsequently renamed for Henry Palmisano, a Bridgeport resident, angler and conservationist whose family ran a long-established local sporting goods and bait business. The result is now a standard case study in landscape performance: the buried waste is capped and vented, the stormwater is treated on site through the terraced wetland, and roughly twenty-seven acres of contaminated ground has been returned to public use.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Walk down into the quarry bowl before you climb the hill. Doing it in that order gives you the full vertical range of the site in one continuous move.<\/li>\n<li>Go up the mound in the last half hour of daylight \u2014 the skyline lights come on across a foreground of prairie grass, and that is the shot.<\/li>\n<li>After heavy rain, follow the terraced stream from top to bottom. It is the only time you can see the whole water treatment system actually working.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Questions_answers\"><\/span>Questions &amp; answers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is Palmisano Park free?<\/strong> Yes, entirely. It is a Chicago Park District park with no admission charge for any part of it, including the hill and the pond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can I fish in the pond?<\/strong> Yes, on a catch-and-release basis. Adult anglers are subject to the usual state fishing license requirements, which are handled by the state and not at the park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Was this really a quarry?<\/strong> Yes. Stone was cut here from the 1830s until 1970, and the exposed rock face still shows the Silurian reef the stone came from. Afterward the hole served as a landfill for construction debris until the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it safe, given the landfill?<\/strong> Yes. The waste is capped and the site has gas venting infrastructure as part of the remediation. It is a fully engineered and monitored park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the hill for?<\/strong> It sits on the capped fill and provides both the park&#8217;s overlook and its running gradient.
